Polly Grice - Camp Co-Ordinator for English Experience Summer Camps and Journalist at Eastern Daily Press

I worked with Freddie in my capacity as Camp Coordinator for the English Experience in 2013 and 2014, where he was an Activity Leader.
He was an extremely valuable member of the team who carried out all his duties efficiently and always gave 110% to the task in hand.
He was popular with the students on our camp and the rest of the staff alike and he is very much a team player, due to his enthusiasm and amiable nature.
He was a real asset to my team and I am very confident in Freddie’s ability to fit into any group and excel under pressure.
I have no doubt that he would thrive in the role.

Steven Waters - Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia and Professional Playwright

I taught Freddy for his undergraduate Level Two course in Creative Writing: Script during his second year here at UEA. He was an avid and high energy member of the group, notable for his keenness to learn and generous contribution to discussion. His writing had a bold quality from the start; his first portfolio was full of strong pieces - his stage directions vivid and intriguing carrying a distinct quality of menace and authenticity, his dialogue is earthy and pacey and his extended monologue remarkable for its abrasive character and sense of world, well caught in salty language.

His final longer play ‘Lucid’ was an interesting, ambitious piece moving from naturalistic pub drama to gothic mystery play without break; what kept it afloat was its honest and well-observed account of its central character and his frustrations, couched in an energetic and gutsy language and informed by telling and convincing social detail, the closing section reaching a kind of eerie clarity.
Freddie kept writing beyond the class (always a good sign) and this year I got to see his extraordinary short play for the University Drama society – a true advance on his earlier work, a funny, distressing and often surreal reflection on war through a colloquy between a soldier and the bullet that kills him. It’s that kind of untrammelled imagination anchored in punchy dialogue that makes Freddie’s work stand out. I’m delighted Freddie is thinking of honing his talent further at Film School; I think he’s in a great place to deepen his craft and further refine his voice; more than anything he has shown he is a writer capable of great development and seething with ideas. I recommend him without reservation.
